A specific factor that has separated this technology from other ystems of reserve and information recovery, is outlook manner of it to geographical areas. GIS with this specification as a modern technology, has been changed to an industry searching in analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and designing the kinds of geographical pictures.
Geographical survey of Iran, considering increasingly developments of science about GIS, established the group of ground information of source in ground sciences branch specially in mineral exploration in the world with a systematic set from expert powers, modern equipment and spatial data by geometrics management from 1375.
Collection, classification, digitization of spatial and descriptive data and formation of involved data bank. Management of data with high capacity and provision of necessary standards. Management of data with different sources
and preparing required outputs.
Combination of different raster and vector data and preparing thematic maps .Preventing repetitions resulting from unawareness of groups and the other users about former works. Preparing maps of mineral prospect areas by arrangement based on genesis and recovery model and analysis of various data including geological data, geochemical data , airborne geophysics ,remote sensing and recognized mineral areas. Preparing natural hazard maps that related to slope stability, landslide, zonation of damage landslides, erosion and … .Cooperation to prepare involved national and international maps.
Performance of joint projects with domestic and foreign companies
Selection of proper locations for accomplishment of engineering projects like dam construction, repelling excessive materials, tunnels,…the group object for using GIS, is usually preparing mineral potential maps .Geological analysis in a region whether for mineral exploration or for oil exploration and so on is basically a combined process of various data. A geologist or explorer can find the objects of this project by relating various data of geology. All geological data for being useful, should be analyzed based on geographic position .GIS by demonstration and analysis of various data enables the involved expert to provide maps that have mineral potential with different data ,although this is impossible by traditional and analogue methods .For mineral prospect is required to collect different layers of data such as geological maps, airborne geophysics data ,remote sensing data, geochemical exploration information and recognized mineral information that will be introduced during special survey correspond to modern methods and modeling and limits as having potential priorities .In past ,choice, evaluation and information combination and existing evidences for recognition of mineral points ,was done by a light desk, various maps were overlaid each other physically to determine joint relations among anomalies. GIS developed this process increasingly and increased required facilities for special data process and analysis of spatial data according to common patterns of the world .
Some accomplished works in this group included :
Presenting mineral prospect areas on scale of 1:100.000,1:250000 in provinces of West Azarbijan,Kordestan, Yazd ,Kerman,Mazandaran.Preparing digital geological maps , engineering geology ,mineral distribution, geomorphology, met alogeny,… on different scales. Digitization of seismo-tectonic d map of the world by order of geological maps commission and UNESCO .Translating geographic informational systems book for Earth science researchers. Preparing zonation maps of landslide risk in Central Alborz ,Semnan province, Takhtesolayman .Finding a place for litter burial in Sari. Provision of thematic reports about gold and antimony. Preparing geomorphologic digital map of Takhtesolayman (1.100.000).Airborne geophysics section was separated from GIS group as a free group at the beginning of 1382.
