Scientific Exchange between Iran and France in field of Middle East geology

After completion of various geological projects in the Middle East between 2003 and 2017, data were exchanged between the implementing countries.

Dr. Razyeh Lak, Director General of Geological Survey of Iran, at a meeting at The National Center for Scientific Research CNRS in Paris, received a copy of full report of this project and at various meetings with French parties as principal project managers discussed ways to continue the studies.

The project is a research program that has been carried out in collaboration with Iran and research institutes in France and some major European and regional universities.

Data and results of this project provide a new interpretation of the Middle East geological evolution. The project included dozens of scientific projects that involved more than 300 researchers 25 European and Middle Eastern countries.

Main purposes of the project are Tectonics, Stratigraphy, Geodynamic and Geophysics and Prof. Eric Barrier as project manager for the regeneration of tectonic evolution of the Triassic period in Middle East, announced that the main objective of the project include:

  1. Sustainable platforms and sedimentary basins of Saudi Arabia, Southeastern Europe and Asia
  2. The Eurasia-Saudi-African enclaves include the main belt of orogeny Caucasus, northern and the central Iran and Zagros.

These goals are based on four main issues:

Analysis of crustal areas subsidence under pressure of sediments in basins, study of ancient energies, formation of shell casings and layering

Since the project covers all the countries that were under the control of Darius Achaemenid Empire, it is named Project Darius.

Geological Survey of Iran, along with seven leading geological surveys, is in charge of Earth's Geological Studies, most of its Tectonics studies, Geosynthetics and Geodynamics of Middle East.

So far, various projects have been published by GSI, including Development of the world's Tectonic Map, the world's Kinematic Map, Geological Map, Tectonics and Metallogeny Map. Middle East's Magmatism and Quaternary Maps are now undergoing a final study at the Commission for the Geological Map of the World.
