The calculation of principal stress directions dominated on Amirkabir dam

Abstract:

The calculation of the principal stresses acting on Amirkabir dam like other engineering constructions can give us expand information about reinforcing and forcasting the threatening risks for the construction. After obtaining the fault planes and their slickenlines in an area around the dam and also analyzing the data with the multiple inverse method, two paleostress phases are recognized. The maximum principal axis is horizontal and has the trends WNW and NNE in these phases. The minimum principal axis has been almost vertical in the both phases. The calculated shape of ellipsoid stress in the both phases is ۰.۴ (middle range). Observations and obtained data around the dam indicate at least three movement phases registered on the fault planes: (The first phase is a reverse movement with dextral strikeslip component, the second phase is a sinstral strike slip movement with a reverse component, and the third phase is a reverse movement with a sinstral component). A very younger movement has been observed in the west area of the river۱:placetype> of Amirkabir۱:placename>۱:place> dam with a normal movement sense having a dextral strike slip component.
