Evaluation of groundwater quality of Zarin Abad area using geophysical Dipole-Dipole method


Abstract :

    Appropriate exploration and exploitation of groundwater for various usages is very important in arid and semi-arid areas where the surface water bodies are limited. The use of different geophysical methods as effective, inexpensive and quick exploration tool can help to explore groundwater aquifer indirectly. Valuable information of aquifers can be obtained if the results of the geophysical investigation are combined with the geological data as a proper manner. This paper attempts to explain the main objective of this study using the geophysical technique to determine the resistivity of the subsurface layers in Zarin Abad plain, Dameghan. The study was carried out in the vicinity of an agricultural well in order to provide a chance for a more appropriate exploitation of groundwater resources. In order to reach the goal, the resistivity profiling method was preformed with taking the geological situation and the size of the study area into consideration on two approximately long profiles. After field operation and data correction and performing appropriate modeling, the results were then interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively. The results show that although the groundwater potential in Zarin Abad plain is considerable, in some areas in particular in the study area, the presence of nearly thick layers of fine grained sediments including clay and silt object the extraction of the high quality and quantity of groundwater.
