Abstract:

The study area is located in north of Fasa City, Fars Province. The aim of this investigation was to study the geological structures based on measurements of dip direction, strike and dip amount on digital elevation model (DEM) extracted from ASTER data. The comparison of the derived measurements from ASTER false color composite and the extracted DEM with those of geological map shows that these measurements do possess acceptable accuracy. The measurements can be done on wider areas as they are less time and money consuming in comparison with the traditional methods. Large parts of zagros folded belt where sufficient outcrops are cropping on the surface can be investigated by using this method. The advantage of this method over the measurements by compass is that, the roughness of the rock surface is less affecting the measurements.
