Experience from the 1990 Manjil earthquake. from other earthquakes and from theoretical studies is that non-engineered reinforced concrete buildings in Iran have design and construction characteristics which make them highly vulnerable to severe damage in earthquakes of an intensity which could occur in many parts of
Iran including major cities such as Tehran.The performance of buildings designed by trained engineers applying upto- date design principles and which have been constructed to a good standard will be better. Even so a proportion of these are vulnerable to severe damage because either they were constructed before earthquake-resistance design procedures were elaborated, or they were designed to codes of other countries which conta2in no or inadequate earthquake resistance design provisions. In this paper, requirements and criteria forimprovement of earthquake resistance of reinforced concrete buildings in Iran are discussed.
