Seismotectonic and Tectonic Stress Indicators in Iran

This paper presents a study of focal mechanisms of earthquakes and stress indicators for Iran. We use the results of 224 focal mechanisms and the main tectonic features of Iran to define the stress pattern of the region. The focal mechanisms show that the Iranian plate is mainly under horizontal compressional stress in two directions: NE-SW direction which is compatible with the regional tectonic stress field, and NW-SE direction which is probably associated with local tectonic motions. Fault plane solutions introduce that the whole area is dominated by strike slip and oblique faulting mechanism.
