Mining industry is considered the main factor for development. Also industrial minerals and its related industries are playing a key role. National strategic planning for such industries needs a comprehensive analysis, particularly comparative advantage of different mineral commodities. Financial problems and high economic risk in mining projects support the idea. This article represents the results of a preliminary research on industrial mineral desirability criteria. In the first step, world and domestic mineral commodity trade and some other factors are collected and analyzed. In the second step, a set of economic and strategic desirability criteria are calculated. The economic criteria are defined as market trade and economic return; also the strategic criteria are estimated as share in Iran?s domestic economy and domestic resource usage.
The determinate desirability criteria provide a background for further study particularly on application of decision making or models such analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy decision making (FDM). Further study on this object will be carried on in future.
