Abstract:
Calcareous nanoplankton is the most important fossils for age determination of Neogene deposits. By this means, a part of relatively thick sequence of Neogene deposits were selected at north ? west of Kashmar city, 20 km away.
In the west of Aliabad-e-Kashmar village this sequence is constituted of four members that are marl, lower sandstone-marl, gypsiferous marl, and upper sandstone-marl from the bottom to the top, respectively. Two members of the lower part were measured and 68 samples were selected and treated for study.
In this way, 2 genera and 6 species of family Ceratolithaceae (horseshoe-shaped nanoplankton) were identified. According to the stratigraphic range of nanofossils the interval between NN11B and NN12 of Martini standard zonation (1971) that correspond to the upper part of Messinian stage (Upper Miocene) and the lower part of Zanclean stage (Lower Pliocene) was determined for the upper part of the lower sandstone-mart member.
