A new graphic module for RASC quantitative stratigraphic software

RASCW version 20 is Windows-based quantitative stratigraphic software based on the RASC/CASC method for processing large datasets of exploratory well section source data. The aim of the graphic module is to provide easy visualization of RASC/CASC outputs in a user-friendly, interactive environment. Researchers are able to extract new information from the data with the help of appropriate graphic displays and by interaction. Main principles used in the development include: (1) Internal consistency preservation: functionality of the interface is retained; graphics, menu and charts are identified by icons and captions indicating their function and contents. (2) Facilitating input requirements: user input file abbreviation is allowed and many reasonable default values are provided. (3) Additional approaches for user interaction, such as graphic zoom functions and user changeable chart parameters. (4) Procedures for feedback: input information and processing data displays.
ActiveX (OCX) Development Environment was chosen to realize the graphic module on a Windows platform, called 2D Chart control which is available as a distinct OCX and DLL custom control for Windows applications. Object-Oriented method was used for the development based on the chart object hierarchy. As a result, more than 15 types of specially designed statistical plots have been realized, including cumulative frequency, ranked and scaled optimum sequence dendrograms, ranking and scaling scattergrams, ranking and scaling event ranges, ranking and scaling correlation plots, various histogram and Q-Q plots. Efforts are being made to further develop the RASCW software to be a user-friendly quantitative stratigraphic correlation tool.
