The Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen studied the geomorphology of Greenland, the North Polar sea and the Barents Sea, and published works on glacier dynamics, the creation of landscape forms, continental shelves, and isostacy. The paper presents the scientific context of this research and also discusses its political implications.
