Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, A moderate underwater earthquake, measuring 4.8 points on the Richter scale, occurred in Avachinsky bay off <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Russia's Kamchatka peninsula at 6:36 am, Moscow time, on Wednesday, an operative duty officer of the department for civil defence and emergency situations of the Kamchatka region told Itar-Tass.

The earthquake epicentre was located approximately 80 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Tremours measuring 3 points on the Richter scale were felt in the
Kamchatka regional centre.
