Shanghai, Nine coal miners were missing in northwestern <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />China in the latest accident in the country's notoriously dangerous mines.

At first, 24 miners were trapped in the accident on Sunday in Hami city in the Xinjiang region but 14 of them managed to find their way above ground and another was rescued, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Rescue operations were continuing on Monday. No details were given about the cause of the accident.

China's vast mining industry is the world's deadliest, with accidents killing thousands of people every year.
