Five Chinese workers were killed and three injured Tuesday in an explosion at a coal mine in northern <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Turkey, local officials said.
The explosion in the state-run mine near the northern city of Zonguldak on the Black Sea coast was caused by sparks flying off a welding machine, the deputy of the Turkish coalmines agency, Cetin Onur, told the Anatolia news agency.
He said he did not expect the death toll to increase, but the governor of Zonguldak, Yavuz Erkman, told the agency one of those injured was in a serious condition.
