The first of an estimated nine thousand people have been taken off a remote island in Papua New Guinea that is threatened with a major volcanic eruption.Six hundred villagers were taken by container ship from Manam Island to a neighbouring mainland community.The Manam volcano has become increasingly active in recent days, throwing out huge volumes of ash that have destroyed the islanders' food gardens and caused houses to collapse.
