Official: 15 dams to be implemented nationwide by March 2006

   Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Jegin Dam near Jask in Hormuzgan province, he added that the construction of 30 more dams are on the government's agenda and the relevant tenders will be held before the end of the current Iranian year in March.
   "At present, our country is currently faced with many worries and threats over supplying the demand for water, including the low level volume of water and constant droughts.
   "This has led to making further investment in the water sector and drawing more attention to the issue and Hormuzgan province is one of the areas high on the agenda," he added.
   Ardakanian noted that once the dam becomes fully operational, over the next 20 years 13,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created for the residents of the area.
   He also referred to the consequent developments in security, economic, social and environmental fields as some of the advantages of construction of Jegin Dam in the deprived provincial town of Jask.
   "With the cooperation of provincial officials, the remainder of the dam project including the construction of ducts for agricultural purposes and supply of potable water for Jask will be implemented.
   "Once the ducts of the Jegin Dam are completed, various agricultural products including bananas will be cultivated on an area of 4,500 hectares of lands to be irrigated by the dam," he concluded.
