D-8 senior experts meeting opens in Tehran

The D-8 Group heads of state/government of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey first met in Istanbul on 15th of June 1997, to boost cooperation between the member countries and establish dialogue with the G-8 Group.
Eradication of poverty, ensuring universal access to economic opportunities that would promote sustainable livelihood, making essential efforts to facilitate access to opportunities and services for the disadvantaged, empowering the people living in poverty and vulnerable groups through the organizations for healthy social life, in particular the planning and implementation of policies that affect them, enhancing the position of the developing countries in the world economy, these all have been cited as parts of the aims and objectives of the D-8 countries.
“We are responsible for identifying the member countries’ potentials in order to develop industrial and mining cooperation between them, and more important than anything else, is to present practical ways for implementation of the cooperation”, noted deputy Minister of Industries and Mines, Mehdi Navab, on the sideline of the two-day meeting.
He also said that each of the member countries have privileges in certain industrial and mining sectors, adding, “It is possible that while preserving their economic and national interests and their competitiveness at the international levels, they may identify each others’ needs and requirements in the industrial and mining sectors.” He further explained that they could also make joint investments in order to put their ideas and initiatives into practice.
The D-8 Group consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
