Two earthquakes jolt Taiwan, no casualties

Two earthquakes measuring 5.2 and 4.6 on the Richter Scale rocked Taiwan on Tuesday, the Seismology Centre said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The stronger, second quake of 5.2 magnitude struck at 11:42 am (0342 GMT), with its epicentre 12 km southeast of Kenting in southern Pingtung county. It originated 41 km under the sea.

The first quake occurred at 7:50 am with its epicentre 12.6 km north of Nanao in Ilan county in the northeast. It came from 46.6 km under the sea.

Taiwan, lying near the junction of two tectonic plates, is shaken regularly by earthquakes. The country's worst, measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale, struck in September 1999 and left some 2,400 people dead
