Earthquake Flattens Villages, Killes 10
An earthquake with a magnitude of at least 5.9 shook a sparsely populated area of southern <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Iran on Sunday, flattening seven villages, killing 10 people and injuring 70, officials and state-run television said.
Qeshm Gov. Heidar Alishvandi said rescue teams were deployed and people in wrecked villages moved to safety.
Another official, Ghasem Karami, said high casualties were not expected because the area isn't heavily developed.
