Bala Zarin-Abad Village Landslides

  Abstract   Bala Zarinabad village, located in the south of Sari city in a hilly terrain. This area mainly consists of different thickness of loess deposits on the Apsheron formation outcrops.  On the 27th of December, following two days heavy rainfall and events of progressive failure a large numbers of buildings show structural damages. Developing of crakes caused demolishing of houses and made a dangerous condition for villagers. Preliminary investigation reviled that village located on place of an old landslide that makes it prone to further instability. Crown and scarp of this old landslide can be observed on upper lands of village. Mass in the village area, due to crashing and existence of many tension surfaces, shows a relatively low strength. Heavy rainfall, nature weakness of loess in contact of water, disturbance of natural drainages and seepage of water from septic wells, deforestation and earthquake events in recent months are other causative factors of instability in the village.  It seems that these instabilities are progressive and may cause more risk to village in future. To identify and prepare a mitigation and stabilization plan following steps should be taken: preparation detailed topographic maps, geophysical and geotechnical investigations. Till then perhaps use of surface drainages in basic shape to collect water from all over of village and prevent it from seepage to the ground can have some effects in prevention of further instabilities for now Text in Farsi
