GEOGRAPHICAL AND STRATIGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF IRANIAN CARBONIFEROUS CORALS

Abstract

ٍٍStratigraphical and geographical distribution of Iranian Carboniferous corals appear to be influenced by episodes of transgression and regression both locally and worldwide. The coral assemblage of Iran is elongated, as a belt from southeast to northwest in the Iranian Carboniferous. In the Lower Carboniferous and Bashkirium stage, Baluchistan basin, central Iran and Alborz, in the aspect of biogeography, has been located in the north of Gondwana paleocontinent and southern margin of Tethys Ocean. The corals of the Lower Carboniferous and Bashkiruim of the Baluchistan, central Iran and Alborz are compared with the corals of Lower Carboniferous and Bashkirium of the other zones of the world. The Iranian assemblages are typical of the Mediterranean province, having abundant specimen of Kueichouphyllum, the genus that define the eastern part of the province, but the whole assemblage show higher similarity with the western Europe assemblages.
