The December 20 2010 Konarak (Rigan-Kerman) earthquake shook ~97 km southeastern Bam
Brief report on Earthquake Reconnaissance after the December 20 2010 Konarak (Rigan-Kerman) Earthquake, Mw 6.7 (USGS), Kerman-Iran
The December 20 2010 Konarak (Rigan-Kerman) earthquake shook ~97 km southeastern Bam, the ancient city that was destroyed due to December 26 2003 (Mw 6.7) seismic event. The earthquakes affected hundreds of square kilometers. The tremor just after five days was followed by 47 aftershocks M>2.5.
Based upon field works just two days after the main shock (GSI-SSG), a surface ruptures has been traced SE of Rigan village (refer to the map). The presence of surface ruptures indicates that seismic rupture can be considered as a branch of the eastern Neh Fault (N070º). Based on this, it suggests that the seismic rupture proagated SSW-ward from the Kahourak Fault up to the surface and toward the Konarak earthquake area. Therefore, the regional trend of the outcrops, however, is NW-SE, but N070° faults can be considered as seismogenic structures through the study area.
This event provides an opportunity to study of feeding pattern of coseismic deformation along the eastern Neh and Kahourak Faults. At the moment, two projects were defined: 1) study of relaxation rate along the causative fault (GSI-SSG and NCC) and 2) study of aftershocks (GSI-SSG). Moreover, the InSAR-derived models will be done for this event. Such acts will help us to compare the surface structure with long- and short-term coseismic deformation.
