Achieving the international honor for the Iranian geoscience community. An Iranian geologist was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) for the first time

Reported by the public relations department of the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI)، the 37th IGC International Conference and the 5th Election Session of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) was held in Busan, South Korea, and Dr. Farnoosh Farjandi, deputy director general of regional exploration of GSI was chosen as one of the ۱۱ final candidates for the Councilor in the Executive Committee by the majority vote of the voting members from the representatives of ۱۲۱ member countries. Other members of this committee were people from South Africa, Slovenia, Germany, Australia, China, Italy, Cuba and Spain.

In this regard, Ms. Farjandi said, ” This is the first time that someone from Iran and the GSI has reached the candidacy stage of the executive committee, and in the election with the vote of the voting members from 121 member countries, I am one of the members of the committee with the highest vote. I was selected by the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and achieved this important international honor.

  Stating that the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) was established in 1961, she added, ” this organization with ۱۲۱ national members representing over one million geoscientists, is one of the largest scientific organizations in the world promoting the international cooperation and participation in Earth science in relation with the human well-being.

The deputy director general of regional exploration of GSI said, ” The International Union of Geological Sciences believes that establishing close links with organizations active in the field of geosciences and especially those related to some of the main activities of this group is mutually beneficial and the study of geological problems, particularly problems globally important as well as the international and interdisciplinary cooperation in Earth sciences are among the tasks of this union.

Mentioning that IUGS pays special attention to international standards, geoscience training, geoscience information and environment and hazard management, Farjandi said, ” promoting the development of geosciences by supporting extensive scientific studies   concerned with the entire earth system and applying the results of them for preserving the natural environment of the planet, intelligent using of   all natural resources and improving the welfare of nations and the quality of human life, strengthening public awareness of geology and advancing geological education in a broad sense, strengthening dialogue and communication between various geoscience specialists around the world, supporting symposiums and scientific trips and producing publications covering a wide range of topics from fundamental research to its economic and industrial applications, from scientific, environmental and social issues to educational and development problems, are part of the goals of this International Union.

It is worth mentioning that Ms. Farjandi is a PhD graduate of Swinburne University in Melbourne-Australia and the deputy director general of regional exploration of GSI having   the scientific supervision of the geochemical exploration projects in Birjand, Divandarreh and Mahabad during the geology -explaoration evolution plan with the scale of ۱:۵۰۰۰۰ as well as the laboratory affairs; the collaboration in IGCP Projects ۵۸۷ and ۶۷۳؛ preparation and publication of dozens of papers in international journals and prestigious domestic and international conferences، being the   scientific and executive secretary of several sessions of Iran's national and international gathering of Earth sciences, referee of prestigious international scientific journals; gaining the title of the best researcher of ۲۰۱۷ of GSI and   membership in the discovery certificate committee of the Mining Engineering Organization among her records.
