Preparing the Seismotectonic Map of ECO Countries by the Geological Survey of Iran

The scientific secretary of the fourth ECO experts group meeting and the director general of the Office of Geological and Environmental Hazard Investigation and Engineering of the GSI said that the organization has prepared the earthquake map of the ECO countries and is preparing the landslide map and these maps need to be updated every year, because we see that every two to three years with a flood, these maps change and this is the situation that the ECO countries have experienced

Referring to environmental risks, he added: Environmental conditions such as drought and climate change have created poor conditions for agriculture, and in addition, we are facing increasing global average temperatures and decreasing atmospheric precipitation.

He also said that low level of water resources and their inefficient management , seawater and freshwater pollutants, earthquakes and volcanoes are other environmental challenges and noted that management of land use and soil erosion are other risks that we face, and since we face different natural hazards, the vision of ECO is to expand cooperation between member states.

He added that the Geological Survey of Iran has responded to these conditions and we are able to prepare seismotectonic maps as well as landslide maps, and it is necessary to update these maps every year, because we see that every two to three years these maps change with a flood, and this is the situation that the ECO countries have experienced."

Dr. Shahbazi pointed to the preparation of multi-risk maps in the country, stating that Iran's high-risk cities have been identified, saying, "If we can develop these maps, we can have a better understanding of the land and the environment." Shahbazi emphasized the development of early warning systems, adding that political boundaries do not define ecological lines and boundaries, and we hope to be able to draw a better future by developing cooperation.
