Reinforcement of the Scientific Cooperation between Iran and China in the Area of Geology

An official delegation from the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI) lead by Dr.Talebian,faculty member of research institute for geosciences of GSI, and Soheila Niluyal, Director of GSI labs, traveled to China to attend 2 important international events and lay the groundwork for developing the scientific-technical cooperation , specifically in the area of geoscience laboratories with China Geological Survey(CGS).

The Asia- Europe Economic Forum (AEEF); An Opportunity for the Regional Cooperation

In the 11^th round of this forum, the representatives of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member countries and the UN were in attendance. Iran’s representative together with a delegation from China, Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan participated in the opening ceremony and put emphasis on the smart use of natural resources.

Geological Cooperation and Mineral Development Conference; Center for Knowledge Exchange

Simultaneous with the forum, the Geological Cooperation and Mineral Development Conference of Shanghai member countries as well as the 4^th International Geophysics Conference of “Belt and Road” was held under the support of CGS and provided a chance for introducing the modern technologies and the scientific achievements of the mining sector.

Iran`s representative introduced “the role of the deep geophysical studies and their applications in the exploration of the mineral resources in the future” and presented the country progresses in recent years and attended actively the drilling modern technologies and airborne surveys roundtable.

In this conference, the mega project of Saudi Arabia for geological and geochemical mapping with a 4-billion-yuan budget carried out by China showing the scientific growth of the region was showcased.

Laboratory Visit and Collaboration

The Iranian delegation visited the cutting -edge labs of Xian and got familiar with the isotopic modern technologies and accurate analyses.

Initially, Director of GSI labs had a presentation on the geoscience laboratory capacities of the organization and then during the negotiations with Deputy Director of CGS it was agreed to hold the joint training courses both in Iran and China and conduct the inter- laboratories tests and exchange the experience of quality management in order to realize the referencing program of the geoscience laboratories of the country.

 Conclusion and Future Perspective

This mission, in addition to introducing the scientific capabilities of Iran, paved the path for the continuous and sustainable cooperation with China and the countries of the region in the field of geology and mining.

Planning for the specialized training, creating the joint labs and engaging in the projects of geological mapping are among the most important future steps in Iran`s geoscience development.
